Seattle Coyotes? Looks More And More Like It

Gary Bettman released a statement today that said the ownership is up to the City of Glendale now and not the NHL.

498There has been talk that the NHL has various 2013/2014 schedules made up that has Phoenix and Seattle games listed. They also have no problem with the “Coyotes” playing out of Seattle’s Key Arena.

I can see Seattle being a hockey city. With their proximity to Vancouver, it could easily start up a rivalry for the ages. That being said, I wish they would move them back to Quebec. I miss those Nordiques.

For fun, let’s think of what the team would be called. Seattle Sonics? Already done. Seattle Reign? Nice ring to it but I think it was already done. Seattle Storm? Also nice but too generic. Got any of your own?? Comment or drop me a line on Twitter! @MissAMarch

SOCHI 2014: Team Sweden

6567Next team we take a look at on our road to Sochi is Tre Konor, aka Team Sweden.

Hellooooooo defence. Lidstrom’s retired you say? Ha. Just take a look at this list of defensive depth: Erik Karlsson, Alexander Elder, Niklas Kronwall, Stanley Cup champ Johnny Oduya, Tobias Enstrom, Victor Hedman and there are a few other names that could pop up from now until the roster is finalized. Pffftttt. Who needs Lidstrom?

Forwards: Alright, so everyone knows the Sedins and that should be their backbone. Oh no no no my friends. Don’t forget about Hennrik Zetterberg, Patrick Berglund, Niklas Backstrom, Johan Franzen, Loui Eriksson, Gabriel Landeskog, and if Captain Ottawa decides to keep playing Alfredsson will be a welcome addition.

Goaltending isn’t as deep but that doesn’t matter when your star goaltender is Henrik Lundqvist. Tampa Bay’s Anders Lindback could wind up being back up but we all know he won’t see much playing time unless Lundqvist gets hurt.

Either way, Sweden is pretty evenly spread out. It’ll be interesting to see where they end up finishing.

Jersday: Calgary Hitmen

Hitmen LogoI don’t care who you were in the 90’s, male  or female, you watched WWF Raw. Religiously. And you either loved or hated Bret Hart.

The Hitmen were formed in 1994 by Graham James (…..), Theo Fleury, Joe Sakic and of course the Hitman himself, Bret Hart. They currently play in the WHL and the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Yes, they started out in pink thanks to Bret but that didn’t give them anything less to be intimidating. Combined with the killer logo, they stood apart from the crowd.

Currently they’ve thrown out the pink and added in red and it looks phenomenal. Combined with the stripes on the side, this sleek jersey in most definitely a collectable to get your hands on.

LNAH 2013 Draft: Thetford Mines Isothermic

isothermicIsothermic de Thetford Mines is next up as we take a look at the LNAH Draft.

The first player to become property of Thetford Mines is Kevin Veilleux. Wanted by almost every team in the league, Veilleux as draft 51st overall in the 2nd round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by non other then the Pittsburgh Penguins. Veillieux played with Pittsburgh’s affiliate in Wilkes-Barre Scanton and also spent some time in the East Coast Hockey League with the Wheeling Nailers. (Yes, that’s a real team.) A 6 foot right winger, Veillieux is a great pick up for the Isothermic.

A great pickup came in the 6th round when Thetford selected goaltender Gabriel Girard. Girard has played the last 5 season in the Q with Shawinigan, and even has a Memorial Cup title under his belt.

Hubert Labrie also became property of Thetford Mines in the 7th round. This guy is a huge defensive pickup. He’s spent a lot of time in the Dallas Stars system and I’ve kept track of his record while writing for the Texas Stars last year. (Shameless plug: head to http://www.blackoutdallas.com) He finished out the season with the Idaho Steelheads and I’m thrilled at the chance to be getting to see him.

From my standpoint, Thetford Mines has gotten a lot of experienced players in their draft. Their scouts did something right.

New Book: Ice Hockey Nights in Europe

A nice little write up about a book dedicated to Hockey fans in Europe. The game in Europe is growing stronger and stronger by the day. Leagues are popping up all over the place. I’m definitely going to hunt this book down and give it a read.

Ice Hockey Nights in Europe
The fans and their passion for the game

I’m no book reviewer but I felt compelled to write after Jonathan Northall published a book about NHL fans in Europe.
Jonathan came upon the idea after a friend of his wrote a book about football (soccer) and thought NHL fans in Europe would make a great subject.

The book has been a labour of love, with work officially beginning back in February, 2012.
A series of eight questions(one a week) were sent to NHL fans in Europe asking them for their views and opinions.
Through hard work, dedication and a little luck no doubt, Jonathan was able to obtain submissions from people within the following countries:
Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Norway,
Poland, Republic of Ireland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden as well as British representation from England,
Northern Ireland, Scotland and…

In a random piece of news from the hockey world, (if it’s even news), Andrew Ference took to new the fairly new app Vine to shave off his playoff beard.

Vine is an app that let it’s users make 6 second videos. Watch him shave it off in all his glory.

Wild Card Wednesday: 1990’s Kraft Dinner Hockey Cards

Welcome to the first installment of Wild Card Wednesday! The post where we bring you some of the fascinating and most ridiculous hockey cards of all time.

Ahhhhh Kraft Dinner. A Canadian staple for kids and college folk. Nothing beats some chopped up hot dogs in a nice bowl of KD made with a Kraft cheese slice…..ok I’m getting off topic. Kraft Dinner had a HUGE promotion in the 1990’s of hockey cards that they would tack onto their boxes. It was a genius marketing ploy to get kids into the game of hockey. Most of them were half decent looking and then some where along the line they began to slack off and made the whole back of the box one big huge card. And they were mostly goalies for some reason.

2034740907_b5cf7ddac1Ok. Where to start on this one. Whoever designed this card either had a firm hatred of the Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Darren Puppa or simply was just a really immature college student. Either way, why on earth would you freestyle hand write the word “Poops” onto the card. Yes I know it was Puppa’s nickname but come on, save the guy a little bit of embarrassment will ya. I actually remember owning this on and taking it to school and laughing at it. Luckily I’ve grown up since then. I think.

31237eRemember Donny Beaupre? Yeah that’s bringing you back now isn’t it. Beaupre spent most of his time in Minnesota and Washington and actually recorded the Ottawa Senators first shutout. There’s actually not much wrong with this one considering it was the 90’s except Bopes? I don’t even think that was his nickname. Someone’s getting lazy here.

mEWtKMjY6edu7f9NJXiQwwQAh Monsieur Roy! C’est bon ca! Well kinda. The red on purple was really a hit I see. Makes the blue a little tingy but hey, what can you do with 1990’s graphics. The “Casseau” you see at the bottom is actually Roy’s nickname. It comes from the fact that he had a diet of french fries and the box it came in is Casseau in French. Now…..I don’t know about you but I dont think that’s something I’d like to be proud of and shared across the country. But hey, at least he looks good!
